Since this is Halloween,
I wanna share a truthful story. When my sister and I were kids, we always wanna
celebrate Halloween like all our friends. Heck, we even figured out what we
wanna be for Halloween! I wanna be a witch when I was 7, the original black
without the green, and my sister wanted to be a princess, either Disney or
other kind, when she was 4. We even had these trick or treat buckets from McDonald's
in two different colors, orange and white. But we never got to go trick or
treating with one of our friends, who was living on the block as we did, or
celebrate it with a Halloween party. In third grade, I wanted to be a Powerpuff
Girl because my sister and i watched the show with our friend since we didn't
have cable. Well, here's the thing: my mom finally wanted us to celebrate it,
but the problem was I didn’t have my costume or my sister had hers, all because
I left my homework in school! Seriously? Because of that? When I was 9, I
wanted to be Cowgirl Barbie and I had look through a Halloween catalogue from
Party City to see who I wanna be. At first, I wanna be a Barbie princess after
seeing costumes display in ToysRus the month before my birthday, but my mom
said that costumes were too small for me based on the sizes of the costumes. I
was a 9 year old girl and I barely understand my size. Then fifth grade comes
and I had thoughts of being either a woodland fairy from American Girl or a
Disney Princess (either Ariel or Aurora, my favorites), but my mom said she's
not buying either and finally told me when I was 10 that we don't celebrate it!
I was like, what? IS she completely insane?! Some of my family celebrates it,
my uncle, my aunts, my cousins, even my older sister and my brother and their
families celebrates it, and one of my nephews was born on Halloween! So how
come we don't? MY dad said that it's evil and I mean, come on?! Really? That's
the most stupid reason I ever heard! It's not evil and my sister knows it's not
evil. Some People do stupid stuff on Halloween, such as pull pranks, egg cars,
TP houses, etc. and we're not like those people! So why can't we have good
kid-friendly Halloween fun like everyone else? As I got older when I started
Lowell, some of my peers and classmates dressed up for Halloween (grim reaper,
angel, witch, etc.) and the middle school has trick or treating. Me, on the
other hand, feel so left out and I wanted to be a Grecian princess and then a
flapper from the 50s (7th grade) and a pop star (8th grade and last year of
middle school). By the time I reached the high school, we didn’t really dressed
up until I was a junior and then a senior. In College, hoping I can changed
everything about my life for this, they started hosting Halloween parties and
apparently I only gone to two, which were really bad. The first was okay, but
really not what I expected. They did had Treats, Costume Contest, even
entertainment by the DJ, except they didn’t play Halloween music, only Michael Jackson
and it was cut only for a minute. Scale of 1-10, I give it a 4. The second was
horrible. There was candy, but not enough treats, just drinks and it was almost
over because I just came from my class. I was gonna go to the other one at
another college I got terminated from after just 4 months and couldn't do it
for a year, but my mom said no because it was gonna get late and might take
forever for me to go and get home.
So far as I looked
back, I begin to develop a hatred towards the holiday because of my parents'
decision and seeing the pictures my friends posted and reading Halloween posts
from social media has made me even more and more jealous and upset! I can never
forgive my parents for taking the joy of Halloween away from me and my sister!
